The European Commission has approved a far-reaching package of measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the EU. The long-awaited plan sets out what each member state must do to reduce CO2 emissions by one fifth by 2020. The package also aims to boost the use of renewable energy. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said concessions will be made to energy-intensive sectors. The proposals first need the approval of the EU member states before they can come into force.
