Based in Germany’s financial capital, Frankfurt, the European Central Bank is responsible for the monetary policy of European Union member states participating in the euro zone. The stability of the euro, Europe's common currency, is its primary responsibility. The ECB sets interest rates and ensures that inflation is held in check. The bank is independent of the political interests of member states.
