A long-running dispute between Germany and Poland over a memorial centre for war-time expellees looks set to come to an end. The conservative politician Erika Steinbach, who heads the German Association of Expellees, has withdrawn her candidacy for the executive board of the foundation that will run the memorial centre, clearing the way for Poland to drop its objections to the centre.
