Frankfurt cracked the top half of the table last season with relative ease. Now the task for this historically mediocre club in one of Germany's major cities will be try to contend for a spot in international competitions.

Frankfurt have invested what is for them the huge sum of 10 million euros in largely unknown players. Striker Nikos Liberopoulos is a proven goal-scorer, but only in Greece and he's 33 years old. Habib Bellaid is a 22-year-old defender whose previous club was relegated in France. Uemit Korkmaz is a midfielder who scored 3 goals in 55 games for Rapid Vienna.

Scenario one: Frankfurt's talent scouts know something everyone else doesn't, and we'll all be talking about their nose for a bargain in coming months. Scenario two: Frankfurt have wasted a pile of cash and will be battling against relegation with the likes of Bielefeld and Cottbus. Take your pick.
