DW's Bundesliga team of the week - Matchday 22
There were not many goals on matchday 22 in the Bundesliga, but without being able to award referee Felix Zwayer with a spot in the team of the week, here are the best of the rest from the weekend's action.
Goalkeeper - Marwin Hitz
Having saved his side from defeat against Liverpool in the Europa League during the week, Marwin Hitz earned his spot in our team of the week once again with plenty of saves against Hannover. None of the Hannover's nine shots on target got past Hitz in the Augsburg goal, with his saves making sure that Ja-Cheol Koo's goal earned the small Bavarian club maximum points.
Defender - Pavel Kaderabek
Having joined Hoffenheim follwoing impressive displays at the U21 European Championships for the Czech Republic last summer, Pavel Kaderabek has only shown glimpses of what he can do in his time with Hoffenheim. An assist with a pin-point cross for one of Mark Uth's goals was the shining light in a disciplined performance.
Defender - Andreas Christensen
Derbies are when a player need to perform at his best, and Andreas Christiansen was top-notch as part of the winning Borussia Mönchengladbach defence which kept a clean sheet. The on-loan Chelsea defender was dominant, marking Anthony Modeste out of the game.
Defender - Benjamin Hübner
This Ingolstadt defense really is difficult to break down, and once again, they kept a clean sheet on Saturday. Benjamin Hübner was a central part of that, and he also got on the score-sheet after a dramatic scramble in the penalty are. He and his defensive partners were able to shut down the in-form Claudio Pizarro and Anthony Ujah with ease.
Defender - Erik Durm
Having returned from injury only a few matches ago, Erik Durm returned to his usual spot as a wing-back with Borussia Dortmund. In the strange game on Sunday at the BayArena, Erik Durm kept cool when he needed to most, winning more duels than any other player and supplying Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with the simplest of finishes to earn an important win against Bayer Leverkusen.
Midfielder - Jairo Samperio
Despite being on the losing side - his Mainz team coming up short in thrilling encounter with Hoffenheim -Jairo Samperio's efforts did not go unnoticed. His assist for the first Mainz goal was followed up with a superb strike from the edge of the box.
Midfielder - Mahmoud Dahoud
Another of Gladbach's derby heroes was Mahmoud Dahoud, who has been a shining light in the club's dramatic season. He scored the vital goal which separated the sides, finishing with confidence past Timo Horn. Playing alongside the club's stand-in captain Granit Xhaka, Dahoud dominanted the midfield until he was substituted.
Midfielder - Arturo Vidal
With Xabi Alonso out the presence of Arturo Vidal as the holding midfielder against Darmstadt helped to make Serdar Tasci's weak performance a non-issue. The Chilean international was a destroyer, tackling and intercepting across the pitch in front of the defense. He also assisted Thomas Müller wonder-goal in the second half.
Forwards - Mark Uth
In what was a five-goal thriller in Sinsheim, Mark Uth became the star of 28-year old Julian Nagelsmann's first ever Bundesliga win. The forward bagged a second-half brace to bring Hoffenheim from behind to beat Mainz 3-2. His first goals since December were welcome reward for Nagelsmann's attacking selection ahead of the game.
Forward - Thomas Müller
It was Müller magic on Saturday at the Allianz Arena as one of Bayern Munich's favorite sons stole the show. His first goal, a well-taken volley under pressure from a defender. The second, one that won't be forgotten easily by any Bundesliga fan, as Müller controled on his chest and put the ball home with an overhead kick. Quite the day for Thomas.
Forward - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
In collecting his 21st goal of the season in the Bundesliga, Borussia Dortmund's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made the only impact on the score-sheet against Bayer Leverkusen. His finish was one of his more simple ones this season, but he still caused issues to the Leverkusen defense throughout the tactically fought game.
