DW-WORLD Users Help Afghanistan
December 7, 2003The dreadful state of affairs in Afghanistan seems to have been forgotten, unlike the reconstruction of Iraq, which is currently in the news. After 23 years of civil war and the reign of the radical Islamic Taliban regime, almost nothing worked in Afghanistan in early 2002. There was no police, army, civil administration, medical care or schools. Only 38% of the boys and 2% of the girls went to school under the Taliban. Even today woman continue to suffer from the lack of health care and education.
For this reason Deutsche Welle and the relief organization Cap Anamur have created the project "100 Classrooms for Afghanistan" as a joint fundraising campaign. They hope to raise a million euros for new classrooms in northern Afghanistan. DW-WORLD is also promoting the project on the Internet.
We have put together some background information on the situation in Afghanistan.
You can also donate via our mutual fundraising site with Cap Anamur - by bank transfer or even more conveniently, credit card. Thank you very much for your support.
