DW-TV Available in Olympic Village in Beijing

The Organizing Committee for the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing has included DW-TV as one of 20 international television channels in its internal network for the Olym-pic and Paralympic Games. DW-TV will be available in the Olympic Village, the press center, the broadcasting center, hotels and venues until September 20.
For one of the most censored media markets in the world, according to Reporters Without Borders, Deutsche Welle produces radio and Internet content in Chinese – including information from China with analysis of political and societal events and opinions about China from a German and European perspective. In doing so, Ger-many’s international broadcaster communicates news from Germany, Europe and the World with its Chinese programming.
DW-RADIO (on-air since 1965) broadcasts three shows in Chinese daily, for a total of 160 minutes, via shortwave and satellite as well as on the Internet. The Chinese ver-sion of DW-WORLD.DE (www.dw-world.de/chinese) has been regularly censored by authorities for the last few years. However, those interested often use the many pos-sibilities to go around the technological blockade, for example by using a proxy-server or reading posted articles in forums.
The complete programming from DW-TV can’t officially be received in the People’s Republic of China. A corresponding license has never been approved. Nevertheless it is becoming more and more available. Individual shows are being broadcast due to cooperation with Chinese partners, like the Hong Kong station ATV in the southern province Guangdong and the Taiwanese station Eastern. It is also available on the Internet via TVU and the video platform UUSee. Deutsche Welle is available to the Chinese mobile market via Dragon New Media.
