Dusseldorf and Cologne – Rhineland Rivals
April 7, 2015Dusseldorf and Cologne have been squabbling over bragging rights for as long as anyone can remember. Dusseldorf, the state capital, fashions itself modern, hip and metropolis, while Cologne advertises its historic charms. That’s also evident in their architecture. Cologne is home to Romanesque churches and the Cologne Cathedral, while Dusseldorf features the Rhine Tower and the upscale MedienHafen harbor district.
From trade fairs to airports to shopping, the cities vie with each other economically as well. Then, of course, there’s the Carnival – and beer. Cologne favors the local straw-colored Kölsch, while Dusseldorf favors the Alt, a brown ale. But despite their differences, the residents of the two cities do share one thing in common – their cheery Rhineland disposition.
