Knapp zwei Tage nach der Unabhängigkeitserklärung des Kosovo haben die ersten Länder den neuen Staat offiziell anerkannt. Die USA, Frankreich, Großbritannien und die Türkei werden vollwertige diplomatische Beziehungen zum Kosovo aufnehmen, zahlreiche weitere Staaten, darunter Deutschland, haben diesen Schritt angekündigt. Groß ist der Unmut darüber in Serbien. Die Regierung in Belgrad will IHRE Botschafter aus all diesen Ländern zurückziehen, in Washington ist das bereits geschehen. Im UN-Sicherheitsrat scheiterte Serbien allerdings mit seiner Forderung, die Unabhängigkeit Kosovos für ungültig zu erklären.
