Michael AltenhenneNovember 3, 2014

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, a mountain range on the Colombian Caribbean coast, is a natural treasure trove. There is scarcely a larger concentration of rare plant and animal species in the world. 337 different kinds of birds alone can be found in the cloud forests of the mountains.

337 different kinds of birds alone can be found in the cloud forests of the mountains. The conservationists from the ProAves Foundation have established a large private bird reserve about 1000 hectares in area. Their special focus is preserving the Santa Marta parakeet, which is threatened with extinction. With reforestation, artificial nest boxes and educating the local population, the bird-lovers have already achieved their first success.
