Late Glik piledriver denies Leverkusen at Monaco
September 27, 2016Monaco 1-1 Leverkusen
(Glik 90+4' - Chicharito 74')
Leverkusen were looking to bounce back after letting slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at home to CSKA Moscow on matchday one, while Monaco started with a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur.
Mexico striker Hernandez, who netted a Bundesliga hat-trick at the weekend, was a constant threat to the Ligue 1 side’s defense.
Hanging cross
Known as Chicharito, Hernandez came close to giving the visitors the lead in first-half added time when he skipped through on the left of the penalty area.
However, Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic got down well and palmed the ball away from danger.
Leverkusen were finally rewarded for their attacking endeavor 17 minutes from time. Admir Mehmedi sent over a hanging cross and an unmarked Hernandez was able to head the ball powerfully past Subasic.
The German side appeared to have the three points sewn up until Glik’s late, late show.
The Polish defender was allowed too much space on the edge of the Leverkusen penalty area and he sent the ball arrowing into the top corner with 94 minutes showing on the clock.
It was hard on Leverkusen, who had looked the hungrier of the two sides, and left them in third place in the section on two points. Monaco lead on four points, with Tottenham on three and Moscow on one.
"It’s a pity," Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt told reporters. "We played very well, the lead was deserved and a win would have been deserved as well. However, football can be brutal sometimes and we have to accept that."
