Bayern simply looking to 'stay in the flow' against Ander
November 21, 2017Since Jupp Heynckes replaced the sacked Carlo Ancelotti following Bayern's 3-0 defeat in Paris last month, the Bavarians are back on a roll, having won all of the subsequent eight matches. And based upon their performance in the Champions League, Wednesday night's opponents, Anderlecht, shouldn't pose much of a problem. The Belgian champions have lost all four of their Group B matches – while being outscored 15-0. This includes the three goals Bayern scored in their encounter at the Allianz Arena in September.
Still, Arjen Robben, who is to captain Bayern in the absence of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller, said the team was determined to deliver a "serious" performance in Brussels, despite the fact that overtaking Paris Saint-Germain for first place in the group looks all but impossible.
"Maybe we'll have a small chance on the last matchday, you never know," Robben told reporters at Munich's airport before the team boarded their flight for Brussels.
'Wishful thinking'
For that to happen though PSG would need to seriously slip up in their match against Celtic at home in the confines of the Parc des Princes.
Coach Heynckes brushed off speculation of such an upset as "wishful thinking" while confirming that Jerome Boateng, Sebastian Rudy and Corentin Tolisso.
"No, I don't think that will happen," said Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, before adding that his club's real task on Tuesday night would be to simply maintain the winning ways that they have rediscovered under the 72-year-old Heynckes.
We're on an eight-game winning streak," Rummenigge said. "We just need to stay in the flow."
