Bundesliga Matchday Five in pictures
Bayern beat Paderborn and climb to the top of the table. Schalke get their first win of the season, and Frankfurt and Freiburg draw with Mainz and Hoffenheim.
Schalke cruise to first win
Both Schalke and Werder Bremen came into Tuesday's match without a win in the current Bundesliga season. The two sides played an equalliy scrappy first half that saw few goal opportunities, but plenty of cards. Schalke came out of the locker room with a bang, scoring two goals in the first six minutes. Bremen had no answers, and Schalke added one more for a convincing 3-0 win.
Bayern end Paderborn party
Paderborn suffered their first ever Bundesliga defeat, falling to a 4-0 defeat against a firing Bayern Munich team. A brace from Mario Götze helped Pep Guardiola's side on their way and despite the gulf in class, Paderborn equipped themselves superbly and can feel positive about their survival chances this season.
Hoffenheim salvage 3-3 draw
A second-half penalty put Freiburg 3-2 ahead with just 15 minutes to go against Hoffenheim, who had already come back from two goals down to even the score. A late red card gave Hoffenheim the chance they needed, and an injury-time equalizer saved a point. Sending penalty scorer Vladimir Darida off for an accidental high foot on Pirmin Schwegler seemed harsh, but the penalty was dubious too.
Frankfurt find late draw
Two goals in three minutes from Jonas Hofmann and Shinji Okazaki gave Mainz the lead as the first half came to a close, but Frankfurt squeeked in a goal before the half to keep their hopes alive. A free kick in the 82nd minute by Marc Stendera found a perfectly placed Haris Seferovic, who headed home Frankfurt's second goal to even the scores at 2-2.
Dortmund miss out against Stuttgart
On Wednesday night, injury-hit Borussia Dortmund just salvaged a point against Stuttgart. Despite the Swabians suffering the sacking of their club legend Fredi Bobic just hours earlier, they went up 2-0 in the game, before BVB clawed back through goals to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ciro Immobile.
Berlin's first victory of the season
Hertha Berlin bagged their first win of the season, hanging on for over an hour to see-off Wolfsburg 1-0. Former Chelsea ace Salomon Kalou opened his Bundesliga account in the 35th minute with a close-range header.
Frustration for HSV
Gladbach managed a 1-0 nil over hapless Hamburg at home on Wednesday. HSV's run without a goal in the league has now stretched to a record five matches, while Gladbach has now moved up to 6th place on the table.
On again, off again in Leverkusen
Heavy rain and lightning stopped the match between Leverkusen and Augsburg for 10 minutes. Still, it wasn't enough to bother the hosts: South Korean Heung-Min Son scored the only goal of the match for Leverkusen 20 minutes into the first half.
Hannover up to third
Thanks to Spanish striker Joselu's fourth goal of the season, Hannover was able to scrape out a win against strong-defensive unit Cologne at home. The club from Germany's north is now sitting pretty in third position on the Bundesliga table.
