Bundesliga: Hoffenheim put Schalke to the sword, Timo Werner does it again for Leipzig
Kevin Volland's two goals bookended a strong home performance from Leverkusen. Julian Nagelsmann vanquished Domenico Tedesco, his former classmate at the coaching academy, and Werner led Leipzig to another victory.
Leverkusen 3 - 0 Hamburg
Kevin Volland (left) apparently loves to play in BayArena! The German forward score two goals against Hamburg, giving him four in Leverkusen's last two home games. Lucas Alario (right) also had a big day, scoring a goal and recording an assist in his Bundesliga debut.
Hannover 0 - 0 Cologne
Cologne finally snapped their five game losing streak, picking up a point in a scoreless draw with Hannover. Yuya Osako may have given the Billy Goats all three points, but his shot in the six-yard box was saved by Philipp Tschauner. Martin Harnik, who entered the game with four goals on the season, failed to get on the score sheet, but Hannover kept their unbeaten record intact.
Hoffenheim 2 - 0 Schalke
Dennis Geiger's first professional goal and a late Lukas Rupp strike settled the battle of the Bundesliga's yougest two bosses in Julian Nagelsmann's favor. Geiger, 19, drove home the opener in the first half to put the hosts in charge. Schalke had their chances but were wasteful and Rupp made them pay after a Ralf Fährmann error. The result moves Hoffenheim above Bayern Munich in to second .
RB Leipzig 2 - 1 Eintracht Frankfurt
RB Leipzig recovered quickly from their midweek loss to Augsburg thanks to their strike pairing. Jean-Kevin Augustin opened the scoring early before Timo Werner finally made the hosts' pressure tell with a sharp strike on the turn in the second half. It was his 16th goal in his last 17 Bundesliga games. An Ante Rebic strike made for a nervous last 10 minutes but the Red Bulls held on.
Borussia Dortmund 6 - 1 Borussia Mönchengladbach
A hattrick form Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (pictured), a Max Philipp brace and a sublime dipping strike from the returning Julian Weigl handed Dortmund a dominant win and a scoreline that didn't flatter them. Peter Bosz's side enjoyed 79 per cent of the possesion and Aubemayang also managed to hit the woodwork three times.
Stuttgart 0 - 0 Augsburg
Augsburg weren’t able to make it four wins in a row but moved in to the top four – at least temporarily – after sharing the points with Stuttgart. The hosts had marginally the better of a match short on incident but neither side did enough to take all three points.
Werder Bremen 0 - 0 Freiburg
Both these sides remain winless in the league this season after an uninspiring goalless draw. Thomas Delaney’s free header in the third minute was about as good a chance as there was, with both sides suffering from a lack of craft in the final third. Nils Petersen almost reprised his midweek supersub role but lifted over late on but this is a result unlikely to satisfy either side.
Mainz 1 - 0 Hertha Berlin
A dreary game came to life briefly at the beginning of the second half when the video referee was called in to action after Karim Rekik bundled over Yoshinori Muto just inside the box. The VAR in Cologne ruled that the Dutchman fouled his opponent and Pablo de Blasis (pictured) tucked away the penalty to help Mainz to their second win of the season.
Bayern Munich 2 - 2 Wolfsburg
While Saturday's matches lacked drama, Friday night's starter was full of it. Bayern Munich looked to be crusing after first half strikes from Arjen Robben and Robert Lewandowski. But Wolfsburg roared back after the break, with Max Arnold pulling one back before Daniel Didavi won his side a point with a sensational header.
