Cologne overcome Gladbach in Derby

In what was a cold, overcast Cologne afternoon, the first Rhine-Derby of the season took its time to spark into life. With the majority of the Foals' support boycotting the match due to reduced ticket allocations, the atmosphere inside the Rhein-Energie Stadion was eerie.

Despite being in the mists of a crisis, it was Gladbach who started the game confidently. Controlling possession, but struggling to create chances. Leonardo Bittencourt and Yuya Osako had the best chances of the first-half, with Yann Sommer forced into work more often than his opposite number, Timo Horn.

The home side began the second half with intent and looked to counter on several occasions, but both sides were having trouble in front of goal, with front-men Josip Drmic and Anthony Modeste both being marked out of the game. But it wasn't long before one of the two strikers got their job done.

Bittencourt's cross from the left corner of the box was a teasing one, which Modeste rose highest for and powerfully headed passed Sommer into the bottom corner. The Swiss goalkeeper motionless as the ball sailed past him. It was the twelfth time that Sommer has had to pick the ball out of his net this season.

Cologne remained comfortable for the final 30 minutes and earned its first home derby win against the Foals in 10 years. Lucien Favre's Gladbach, on the back of a crushing opening loss in the Champions League, remain pointless after five games of a Bundesliga season for the first time in the club's history.

Darmstadt 0-3 Bayern Munich

"We will give everything,” was the battle-cry from Dirk Schuster before his Darmstadt side took to the field against German champions Bayern Munich. For almost an hour, the battle was relatively even, before Bayern clinched what was a comfortable win in the end.

It took just 20 minutes for the Munich powerhouse to take the lead in Darmstadt. Douglas Costa cut inside from the left flank and set-up Arturo Vidal. The Chilean midfielder smashed home his first Bundesliga goal for the club off the post from 20 yards out.

Darmstadt didn't let the setback get to them, however, and were forcing the better chances through the remainder of the first half. Manuel Neuer was forced into several saves from Dominik Stroh-Engel and Konstantin Rausch, while Marcel Heller could only find the side-netting with a close-ranged effort.

In the second half, Bayern removed any silenced any doubt about the result with just under half an hour to play. Sebastian Rode forced his way down the right-hand side before finding debutant Kingsley Coman in the box. The French forward slotted home his first Bayern goal with ease. Moments later and Rode had a goal of his own, after he tapped home at the second time of asking.

Pep Guardiola's side were comfortable through to the end, going top of the Bundesliga with five wins out of five, before Borussia Dortmund face Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. Darmstadt's first loss of the season was one that was always going to be difficult to prevent.

Wolfsburg and Ingolstadt snatch late wins

It was an unusually remarkable Bundesliga matchday, with only seven goals being scored in the five fixtures played. With three coming in one game at Darmstadt, it was left to Cologne and Wolfsburg to grab the other goals. In a tame match at home to Hertha Berlin, Bas Dost's second half brace was all that separated the German Cup winners from the capital club. The Dutchman first being assisted by Daniel Caligiuri for a tap-in into an open net, before the striker slotted home from 12 yards after Julian Draxler was tripped up in the box.

In Bremen, it was a defensive blunder in injury time which earned Ingolstadt a memorable win to move the newly promoted team up to fifth in the Bundesliga table. With just seconds to play, Stefan Lex raced through into the Werder box and after a foolish pull-back from Assani Lukimya, went down and was awarded a penalty. Moritz Hartmann stepped up and scored the club's first Bundesliga penalty. Werder's frustration was compounded when Philipp Bargfrede saw red just before the end for a horror-tackle. Hamburg and Frankfurt played out a poor goalless draw in the fifth game of the day.
