January 27, 2007BREMEN 3 HANOVER 0
The players of the league wore black armbands this Sunday in remembrance of the League's president, Werner Hackmann, who passed away unexpectedly overnight.
In pouring rain, Werder Bremen regained first place in the table with a 3-0 win over Hanover. Coach Thomas Schaaf had to do without the services of striker Ivan Klasnic who has been operated on -- we'll have more on that story later.
The victory could have been even higher than it was but Hanover keeper Robert Enke played excellently to keep it to those three Bremen goals. Tim Borowski started the scoring in the fifth minute. Miroslav Klose was denied three clear chances, one on a penalty kick. Hugo Almeira put the game in the bag in the 67th minute. Former Hanover defender Per Mertesacker got the final goal in the 74th minute.
AACHEN 2 LEVERKUSEN 3
In the second Sunday match, Leverkusen took three points on the road at Aachen. The Rhineland club turned around a two-goal deficit to win 3-2. Bernd Schneider's second goal of the match just before the hour mark was the gamewinner. Ukrainian Andrey Voronin scored the equaliser just minutes before. Reghecampf and Ibisevic had put Aachen up in the first half.
Saturday's results:
EINTRACHT FRANKFURT 1 SCHALKE 3
Schalke moved top of the German Bundesliga on Saturday for 24 hours at least. But they earned the victory with a hard-fought away 3-1 win. Uruguayan international Gustavo Varela put Schalke in front in the 17th minute after being put through by Kevin Kuranyi but Naohiro Takahara equalized for Frankfurt shortly after the restart with his seventh goal of the season. However two second-half goals from Kuranyi, the second coming in injury time, ensured Schalke enjoyed a winning start to the second half of the season after the winter break.
NUREMBERG 4 STUTTGART 1
Stuttgart lost valuable ground on the leaders, crashing 4-1 at Nuremberg in a game that saw Stuttgart finish the game with 10 men after Serdar Tasci was sent off for a tackle from behind on Horacio Pinola.
ARMINIA BIELEFELD 1 HAMBURG 1
Hamburg's relegation woes continued as Thomas Doll's side could only manage a 1-1 draw at Arminia Bielefeld.
ENERGIE COTTBUS 3 MOENCHENGLADBACH 1
Hardly a fitting way for Jupp Heynkes to celebrate his 500th Bundesliga match as manager. But the wintry conditions in Cottbus probably played their part. Energie Cottbus moved clear of the relegation zone on 20 points thanks to a 3-1
win over Borussia Moenchengladbach, who remain third-from-bottom on 15 points.
HERTHA BERLIN 2 VFL WOLFSBURG 1
Hertha Berlin closed to within two points of Schalke with a 2-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg, courtesy of Marko Pantelic's penalty four minutes from time. That goal puts him on top of the goal scorers table this season. Hertha fans made sure that Wolfsburg’s new signing Marcelinho – a former Hertha player before he moved to Turkey -- had a sour comeback to the Bundesliga, booing and whistling every time the Brazilian player kicked the ball.
DORTMUND 3 BAYERN MUNICH 2
In Friday night's game, new Borussia Dortmund coach Juergen Roeber got off to the perfect start as his side came from behind to stun defending champions Bayern Munich.
The result leaves Munich six points behind Schalke.
