Following the controversy over the war in Iraq, relations between German and US leaders were somewhat rocky in recent years.
But the two countries continue to have strong ties. Senior US officials in Germany point out that they are on best speaking terms with their German counterparts and laud Germany's role in helping to fight terrorism in Afghanistan.
US businesses also keep showing more confidence in Germany's struggling economy than many Germans themselves.
