Patriots win Super Bowl 49
February 2, 2015A monsterous performance from quarterback Tom Brady and a last gasp interception by rookie free agent Malcolm Butler gave the New England Patriots a 28-24 victory against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX, handing Bill Belichick's team their fourth Vince Lombardi trophy. Brady finished the night having completed 37 of 50 attempts, for 328 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.
Despite that performance, the game was right in the balance until the final moments after Jermaine Kearse juggled and eventually caught a 33-yard pass to set-up a goalline opportunity for the Seahawks in the final seconds. On first and goal, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson attempted a pass to Ricardo Lockette, but Butler stepped across to make a game-changing interception. Seattle's frustrations spilled over to add a bitter taste at the end of a thrilling game.
In the early stages, the New England defense looked far more imperious than that of the Seahawks. Brady moved his side up the field, but threw an interception - Jeremy Lane suffered a game-ending injury in the process - to nullify the Patriots' redzone visit. He did find Brandon LaFell to give them the lead though, although Marshawn Lynch ran in to draw the scores level before a frantic finale to the first half.
Brady produces clutch performance
Brady, showing the skill set he's become famous for, marched his team down the field with only a minute left in the first half, ending the drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. Astonishingly, Wilson then did the same, targeting wide receiver Chris Matthews who had yet to make an NFL reception in his career. Matthews had hauled in a 44-yard pass earlier, but with only his second ever reception he caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to make it 14-14 at half time.
After Katy Perry lit up the half-time show with guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot, America's most popular sporting event was back. Steven Hauschka hit a field goal for Seattle as New England's defense stood strong. With Brady throwing another interception, the Seahawks took advantage and Wilson eventually threw to Doug Baldwin to stretch their lead to 24-14 going into the final quarter.
With time running out and the game looking beyond the Patriots, few could have predicted what followed. Despite being sacked on the first play of the drive, Brady then led his team to a 68-yard drive that ended with a Danny Amendola touchdown to pull New England within three. Brady then found Julian Edelman, his favorite target on the night, for a four-yard touchdown with over two minutes to go to put New England in front by four.
Then Kearse caught Wilson's long pass, before Butler stepped in for the greatest moment of the cornerback's career.
Tom Brady won MVP for his performance, and now also holds the record for the most Super Bowl touchdown passes ever in the history of the National Football League (13). In the fourth quarter alone, Brady threw 12 of 14, for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
