Bayern Munich sign Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen
June 11, 2017Bayern Munich have signed German international Serge Gnabry from Werder Bremen on a three-year deal, the Bundesliga champions confirmed on Sunday.
Gnabry, 21, scored eleven goals in 27 appearances for Werder last season after joining from Premier League giants Arsenal. German media reported at the time that Bayern Munich were involved in the transfer and had the option to purchase the player after year, suggestions which were strongly denied by Bremen sporting director Frank Baumann.
But that now appears to be precisely what has happened, with Bayern making Gnabry their third summer signing after completing deals for Nicklas Süle and Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim.
"We're delighted that, in Serge Gnabry, another young German international is joining FC Bayern," said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "Serge has developed really well in Bremen."
A breakthrough season
Gnabry was particularly instrumental in the first half of the season when, in the absence of Bremen's more experienced strikers, his goals rescued valuable points against Darmstadt, Hamburg, Cologne and Hoffenheim.
This season also saw Gnabry make his international debut, scoring a hat-trick on his first start for Germany in an 8-0 win away at San Marino. Prior to that, he had already been part of Germany's Olympic team which came second in Rio de Janeiro.
"It's a great honour to become part of FC Bayern," he said in an official statement. "It’s going to be an exciting time and one that I’m very much looking forward to."
