In her New Year's address to the nation - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said her government would focus on family values in 2008 - vowing to move the family "back to where it belongs - in the center of society". She also noted that, for the first time since unification in 1990, the country had come close to a balanced budget and had improved its standing in research and education.
