In the United States, Republican John McCain has surprised observers by choosing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in his bid for the presidency. The 44-year-old Palin is the first woman to appear on a Republican presidential ticket. And she's been governor of Alaska, one of America's least populous states, for less than two years.
