10 German comfort foods for the winter

Germans coming from the region of Swabia in southern Germany have unfortunately become scapegoats in Berlin, symbolizing the gentrification of the city, since some have made the capital their home. However, it can only be recommended to either live or become good friends with a Swabian - especially if they know how to cook.

Among the dishes discussed in the gallery above, three of them are from that region: Flädlesuppe, Maultaschen and Spätzle.

In 2009, the EU recognized that Maultaschen are a Swabian regional specialty and that genuine ones can only be produced there.

Hand-made Spätzle, covered with melted cheesed, butter, and frizzled onions, will make you understand the meaning of Gemütlichkeit.

To experience how amazing these comfort foods truly are, you can't simply go buy them from the supermarket. It needs to be the real thing.
